My Final Major Project explores the relationship between fine art and contemporary makeup artistry through two transformative hair and makeup designs, inspired by the works of Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. My project aims to challenge the perception of makeup as purely cosmetic by presenting it as a form of visual art and craftsmanship. The first look draws inspiration from Monet’s Water Lilies paintings and the softness of weeping willow landscapes. Impressionist colours and textures are carefully translated onto the face, transforming skin into a living canvas. A handcrafted floral wig complements the design, symbolising nature, growth, and the harmony between painting and human form. The second look is influenced by Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, focusing on movement, emotion, and expressive brushwork. The makeup recreates the painting’s swirling energy, while a large, wispy wig mirrors Van Gogh’s iconic strokes, creating a sense of motion and atmosphere. Together, these works communicate a central message: makeup artists are artists. Through technical skill, creativity, and storytelling, hair and makeup design becomes a powerful artistic medium, celebrating the craftsmanship behind an often overlooked yet essential creative discipline.
Below are some projects i embarked on throughout my time at university and college.
Projects
Throughout this project, I have focused on experimentation and developing a wide range of hair and makeup techniques suitable for editorial and fashion-focused work. By exploring different styles, products, and creative approaches, I have gained confidence in adapting looks to suit various briefs and themes. This process has allowed me to refine my technical skills while also encouraging me to think creatively and push the boundaries of my work.
During my studies, I have learned to create a variety of professional hair and makeup looks, including natural “no makeup” makeup, full glam transformations, red-carpet-ready beauty, and classic Hollywood waves. I have also developed skills in creating elegant hair-up styles and editorial looks tailored to different concepts and clients. Through continuous practice and experimentation, I have improved my understanding of product application, colour theory, styling techniques, and the importance of creating polished, camera-ready results for both fashion and media industries.
I have experience in all stages of special effects makeup creation, from initial concept design through to final application on set. My skills include designing and sculpting original prosthetic pieces, mould making, casting, and producing high-quality silicone and other prosthetic appliances.
I am experienced in colouring and painting prosthetic pieces to achieve realistic skin tones, textures, injuries, creatures, and character effects. Every piece is carefully designed and finished to meet the specific requirements of the project.
Alongside fabrication, I carry out the final makeup application, seamlessly blending prosthetics with traditional makeup techniques to create convincing and camera-ready results. Whether working on character transformations, injuries, ageing effects, or fantasy designs, I deliver professional, detailed work from concept to completion.
Creating believable and engaging characters begins with thorough research and careful planning. I specialise in developing makeup and hair designs that support a character’s story, personality, and environment while remaining visually cohesive with the overall production.
For period and historical work, I undertake detailed research to ensure accuracy in hairstyles, makeup trends, and grooming practices relevant to the era being portrayed. This research informs every design decision, helping to create authentic and credible character looks that enhance the storytelling.
I design bespoke hair and makeup concepts tailored to each character, considering factors such as age, social status, occupation, lifestyle, and narrative development. From subtle natural looks to more transformative character work, I create designs that are both aesthetically effective and appropriate for the production’s creative vision.
By combining research, creativity, and technical skill, I develop character looks that are authentic, practical, and fully aligned with the needs of the project.
